Skype drops Snapchat-like Highlights feature

A year ago saw a new Highlights feature seemingly styled after Snapchat's Stories, but that's now being dropped.

"As Skype functionality has expanded, so too has its complexity". As well, the newest versions of Skype, barring the Skype UWP app on Windows 10, will now natively support call recording which is something we have not been able to do since Microsoft killed support for third party applications. Highlights were very similar to Snapchat Stories, and the team says they didn't "resonate with a majority of users". As with any feature-rich product, maintaining simplicity while enhancing functionality is critical to usability.

Skype has undergone a much needed redesign yet again, this time retracting on mistakes, and going back in time to bring a simple and navigation-friendly design.

And now, Skype design director Peter Skillman has written in a blog: "This past year we explored some design changes and heard from customers that we overcomplicated some of our core scenarios". Not only is this meant to provide a central place for navigation for Skype users, but it should also strip it back to a cleaner interface.

By removing Highlights and Capture, mobile UI if free to centralise its navigation to three buttons at the bottom, dubbed "Chats, Calls, and Contacts", while notifications sits in the top left.

The video-and-voice platform would now also come with light and dark theme options to choose from.

The new Skype design is available with the latest update to version 8.29 for Android, iOS, OS X, Linux, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 operating systems. If you want to store it for longer, you can simply download and save the video locally.

"This is only the beginning and you can expect many more updates over the next several months as we continue to simplify and improve the core experiences around calling, chat and contacts".

Microsoft loves to tweak and fiddle with Skype.
