The U-Series, formerly codenamed Whiskey Lake, are 15W chips focused on connectivity and performance laptops, whereas the Y-Series, formerly codenamed Amber Lake, are 5W chips meant for the thinnest possible laptops. Intel's hardware partners are expected to unveil systems built around the new chips later this week, after IFA officially opens.
In fact, rather than compare performance to last year's processors, Intel decided it would describe the improvements the new processors would make for computers 5 years old, which is an eon in tech terms.
And considering that IFA 2018 is just down the road and that Apple has not refreshed its MacBook Air and MacBook series, we do expect to see plenty of devices packing Intel's newest laptop processors. The on-package DMI interconnect (OPI) then links to an integrated platform controller hub (PCH) adding in USB 3.1 10Gb/s, USB 3.0 5Gb/s and USB 2.0 connectivity, SATA 3.0, Thunderbolt 3, PCI Express 3.0, the integrated Wi-Fi, Optane support, wired LAN, and the usual additional buses and a dedicated quad-core audio digital signal processor (DSP). To help buyers figure out what games they can play, and what settings to use, check out Intel's existing gameplay.intel.com website, which provides a list of compatible games, and suggested resolution and detail level settings based on your exact hardware, including updated setting for these new CPUs. But it does support Gigabit Wi-Fi by way of external or discrete modules, and it has preloaded eSIM support for Intel's Gigabit LTE modems. On top of that, all of these new U-Series mobile CPUs are integrated with Intel's latest Gigabit Wi-Fi module.
The processors will also offer double-digit gains in office productivity for everyday web browsing and light content creation over the previous generation of processors, the statement said.
Intel also brags that its low-power design will translate into noticeably better battery life. While power-optimized systems will reportedly achieve a staggering 19 hours on a single charge.
The most important thing about these chipsets is that they would support voice services like Cortana and Alexa. The U-series CPUs support Dolby VisionHDR and Dolby Atmos audio.
