Google Maps renames Russell Senate building for McCain

The Phoenix memorial follows a few days of confusion at the White House over whether American flags at USA government buildings would be flown at half-staff, in the traditional gesture for prominent political figures following their deaths.

The 109-year-old building is named after Sen. Wednesday would have been his 82nd birthday.

The air around the Arizona State Capitol was heavy as McCain's body moved from the A.L. Moore Grimshaw-Mortuary Wednesday morning.

In the last 40 years, only two others have lain in state in that building: Arizona state Sen.

Cindy McCain laid her head on her husband's casket as the family along with McCain's friends and his fellow Arizona dignitaries said their goodbyes to the senator's flag-draped casket.

Ms McSally who will be contesting a seat left by retiring Republican Senator Jeff Flake, pitched into her November rival straight away, signalling a bruising fight ahead as Republicans take on a Democrat Party determined to finally flip the state on the back of an energised base.

Military personal carry the casket of Sen. John McCain. Ward, who frequently criticized McCain, ended the night almost 25 points behind the more moderate McSally, a veteran and the first US female fighter pilot to fly in combat.

John McCain was well known for his support of Phoenix's professional sports teams during his time as a USA senator from Arizona, but his bond with Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald was especially strong.

Kyl said McCain "believed in America, he believed in its people, in its values and in its institutions".

In the afternoon, the Capitol will be open to members of the public who want to pay their respects.

That may have implications for the 2020 race and Doug Ducey's appointment of a replacement for John McCain, too.

McSally, who was poised early on to be the party's nominee, aligned herself with President Donald Trump from the start of her campaign, despite calling him "disgusting" two years ago after a tape of Trump allegedly admitting to sexual assault surfaced. Arizona and U.S. flags encircled the room. The single mom and Democrat brought a bouquet of flowers and said she had always looked up to McCain.

McCain's death could give Trump even greater leverage over a rightward-tilting Republican party as he fights for his political life against the Russian Federation meddling and obstruction investigations.

A memorial service, to be attended by family, friends, political leaders and other dignitaries, is scheduled for Thursday at the North Phoenix Baptist Church.

Fitzgerald's tribute will come before that of former vice president Joe Biden. Musical choices include a recessional to "My Way" by Frank Sinatra.

From there, McCain's body will depart Arizona for the last time from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
