In an interview with Al Jazeera, Bruce Fein, a former top U.S. prosecutor, described the reports as significant amid questions over the culpability of Trump's business in the payoff scheme, which Cohen had pleaded guilty to.

"I should have been more clear - including with you - that I could not independently confirm what happened", Davis told the Post.

From August 22 to August 25, 44 percent of voters approved of Mr. Trump's work as president, though a 52 percent majority disapproved.

Cohen said the payment was made for the "principal goal of influencing [the 2016] election". "I regret the error". He said he raised the idea that Cohen might have information about Trump's knowledge because he had a strong feeling that might be the case.

"Michael Cohen's attorney clarified the record, saying his client does not know if President Trump knew about the Trump Tower meeting (out of which came nothing!)". He also handled Trump's tax returns.

People familiar with Cohen's testimony to the House and Senate Intelligence committees said Cohen was interviewed extensively about the Russian interference campaign but did not provide any information to suggest Trump had advance knowledge.

"They had a very successful conviction of Paul Manafort".

Separately, federal prosecutors in NY granted immunity to tabloid executive and longtime Trump friend David Pecker to discuss Cohen's case. In retrospect, he said, "I am just not sure". In court filings, prosecutors say two unnamed Trump Organization employees - "executive 1" and "executive 2" - helped set up the reimbursement.

The issue of whether a sitting president can be indicted has not been tested, though Trump allies point to two previously written legal opinions that weigh in against the prospect.

Money and loyalty also drove Cohen to make guilty pleas this past week in a spinoff from the swirling investigations battering the Trump White House.

"This despite all of the made up stories by the Fake News Media trying endlessly to make me look as bad and evil as possible."

"Over 90% approval rating for your all time favorite (I hope) President within the Republican Party and 52% overall", Trump wrote in the tweet.

According to WaPo, Davis was an anonymous source for a story that the newspaper ran in July confirming the CNN report.

Another Trump lawyer, Jay Sekulow, was forced earlier this month to correct an assertion from past year that Trump was not involved in dictating a news media statement aboard Air Force One about the goal of the Trump Tower meeting.

Davis primarily functions as a spokesman for Cohen, with the bulk of the actual legal work being done by NY lawyer, Guy Petrillo, who used to work for the Manhattan office now leading the prosecution.

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday", Lewandowski sought to distance Trump from his former attorney and denied that Cohen played any significant role in Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.
