Verify: Is coconut oil really 'pure poison' as one Harvard professor said?

The professor is claiming coconut oil to be poison and unhealthy for humans.

For those who are concerned about lowering their cholesterol, the American Heart Association recommends "reducing saturated fat to no more than 5 to 6 percent of total daily calories".

Thus, coconut oil may not be literally poisonous but given that it is loaded with saturated fat, it may not be the most ideal superfood to chug. The oil has "no known offsetting favorable effects", the AHA said in an advisory previous year, and it could actually increase LDL ("bad") cholesterol, a cause of cardiovascular disease.

Some have claimed the health benefits of coconut oil as curing Alzheimer's, helping with weight loss, cancer and that it is healthier than butter.

He says you don't want to layer coconut oil with other saturated fats.

Studies support this with evidence that found replacing saturated fat with polyunsaturated fats reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.

There is also little actual quantified research when it comes to the effects of coconut oil on the body. "HDL is called the "good cholesterol" because it helps to keep cholesterol from building up in the arteries, while LDL is called the "bad cholesterol" because it's the main source of cholesterol build-up and blockage in the arteries, which can lead to heart attack and stroke".

Coconut oil could have other good uses that don't involve using it as food. Experts warn that consuming large amounts of coconut oil will not benefit those at risk for cardiovascular disease. "Things like almonds have a lot of fat, but it's easier to overeat pure oil than overeat pure almonds", Klatt said.

So instead of saturated fats doctors recommend healthier oils such as canola, corn, soybean and olive oils, but Dr. Oz add that a small amount of coconut oil won't kill you, but it won't make you healthier either.

"Coconut oil is about 86% saturated fat, about one-third more saturated fat than butter", said Victoria Taylor, a senior dietician at the British Heart Foundation.

"It's not that you have to absolutely avoid coconut oil, but rather limit coconut oil to where you really need that special flavor, like for Thai food or for baking a special dessert", Willett said.
