There is no safe level of alcohol intake, study warns

The Global Burden of Disease study looked at levels of alcohol use and its health effects in 195 countries, including the United Kingdom, between 1990 and 2016.

Researchers calculated that alcohol revenue would decline by two-fifths, or £13bn (€14.4bn), if all drinkers were to comply with the recommended consumption limits.

Studies about drinking alcohol typically have one thing in common: The result is usually that everything's OK in moderation.

There is no healthy level of alcohol consumption, according to a new Global Burden of Diseases study.

Using that data, researchers found that alcohol is associated with 2.8 million deaths each year worldwide.

Those deaths include alcohol-related cancer and cardiovascular diseases, infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, intentional injury such as violence and self-harm, and traffic accidents and other unintentional injuries such as drowning and fires.

The researchers noted some benefits of alcohol but still maintained that the side effects are far worse. Another improvement over past studies, she said, was a new meta-analysis of the effects of alcohol on the 23 health outcomes, which was then used to access risk.

The findings contrast with most health guidelines, which say that moderate drinking - about 1 drink a day for women and 2 for men - is safe. "We advocate sensible drinking by those who choose to drink and support consistent, evidence-based advice, which enables people to make their own informed choices about alcohol".

The global alcohol league table shows that Romanian men are the world's heaviest drinkers, averaging 82g of alcohol a night, equivalent to a bottle of wine or five pints of beer. For people over 50, cancers were cited as a leading cause of alcohol-related death (about 27 percent of deaths in women and 19 percent of deaths in men).

Drinking patterns varied globally with the highest number of current alcohol drinkers in Denmark - 95.3 per cent of women, and 97.1 per cent of men - while New Zealand had the fifth highest prevalence of female drinkers at 88 per cent. Kiwi men didn't feature in the top 10.

The research, published in the Lancet, states that an average of one in three people, or 2.4 billion people, drink alcohol, including 25% of women and 39% of men.

If consumers have questions regarding alcohol and health, they should discuss the potential risks and benefits of consuming alcohol with their physician, the Distilled Spirits Council stated.

They found that out of 100,000 non-drinkers, 914 would develop an alcohol-related health problem such as cancer or suffer an injury.

Drinking patterns vary globally.

"I can't see negatives associated with no drinking".

For years, public health officials have said that, while no one should pick up drinking in search of better health, moderate drinking (defined as up to a drink per day for women and up to two per day for men) probably won't hurt anyone who already imbibes, and may even confer some benefits.

A lot of them relied on self-reported information, which means people have to remember their drinking habits accurately, which means the data might be flawed or inaccurate, according to CBS.
