Mobile discovers security breach of certain customer information

Here's the full rundown from T-Mobile. Credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and social security numbers were not involved. The breach was discovered on August 20 by T-Mobile's cyber-security team and shut down, but not before the damage was done.

T-Mobile revealed that hackers may have stolen personal information on some of its customers.

T-Mobile today confirmed that it was affected by a security breach.

In T-Mobile's statement about the hack, the carrier clarifies that those who were affected are being promptly notified with a text, like the one you see here. Some personal customer data may have been exposed, though, including name, billing zip code, phone number, email address, account number, and account type. Passwords for T-Mobile accounts were also not compromised. If you are a T-Mobile customer, you can dial 611, use two-way messaging on MyT-Mobile.com, the T-Mobile App, or iMessage through Apple Business Chat.

In plenty of other breach incidents, companies have realised what happened only after they were contacted by a third-party researcher, by the attackers themselves, or, in the worst-case scenario, by customers reporting fraud attempts. Doing some quick math, three percent of 77 million is 2.31 million. The US telco says it informed law enforcement authorities about the breach. "We truly regret that this incident occurred and are so sorry for any inconvenience this has caused". Even though no financial info or social security numbers were exposed in this particular breach, details like a person's name, phone number, and email address are still sensitive info.
