Why a Harvard professor is calling coconut oil 'pure poison'

This goes against the common belief that coconut oil is good for your health, as it's previously been hailed as a "superfood" that can be used in the kitchen as a component of any meal.

Among other things, she told her audience that "coconut oil is pure poison, ' and 'it is one of the worst foods you can eat", according to a translation by Business Insider.

Health expert has claimed "superfood" coconut oil is actually not healthy at all.

The video, which has amassed more than 400,000 views since being published on July 10, will add fuel to the fiery debate over the oil's nutritional properties; many have turned to coconuts as a guilt-free fat, but even the American Heart Association has urged consumers to restrict their use.

Karin explains that these saturated fatty acids also have the potential to clog one's coronary arteries, so it's no surprise health professionals aren't a fan.

But don't throw out that coconut oil just yet, because if you've been using the oil for its cosmetic benefits then it can't be taxing on your heart.

Michels talk comes one year after the AHA updated its dietary guidelines, which now recommend people avoid the saturated fatty acids found in coconut oil.

She says most of the beneficial nutrients in them can be easily found in more common foods like carrots, cherries, and apricots. The American Heart Association recommends the average person only consume around 11 grams of saturated fat per day, or about 5 percent of your total daily calories. "Coconut oil can be included in the diet, but as it is high in saturated fats should only be included in small amounts and as part of a healthy balanced diet", the British Nutrition Foundation said.

'We are well and sufficiently supplied, ' she said.

USA Today reported 82 percent of the fat in coconut oil is saturated, which is way above that in butter (63 percent).

It's true that coconut oil is rich in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which are the most healthy type of saturated fat. Because of its anti-inflammatory effects and absorbent nature, coconut oil is a great topical remedy or those who suffer from dry skin. She declared that "coconut oil is pure poison".

The AHA found that replacing saturated fat intake with polyunsaturated vegetable oil greatly reduced the risk of developing cardiovascular disease, similar to the numbers achieved by prescribed drug treatment. And while there's no question that downing spoonfuls of coconut oil on a daily basis is a bad idea, if you like the taste, there's no reason to ditch it altogether.
