Aussies put out their potatoes for Peter Dutton after failed leadership challenge

Following the ballot, The Prime Minister called for "unity" within the Liberal Party and to "get on with the job" of governing the country.

Despite his party's lead in opinion polls, Shorten has consistently trailed Turnbull as preferred prime minister. "The saving grace for Labor is voters don't like Malcolm Turnbull much better", said the ANU's McAllister.

Australia's election is set to be held in the middle of next year.

Less than nine years ago, those exact figures spelled approaching doom for Turnbull's first leadership of the Liberal Party, which was in its unhappy days of opposition.

Malcolm Turnbull has been mortally wounded as Prime Minister after barely surviving a leadership vote against Peter Dutton this morning. Turnbull ruled out any retribution against ministers suspected of supporting Dutton and said he had invited Dutton to remain in the senior security portfolio.

Ms Bishop didn't weigh-in on whether Mr Dutton will challenge Mr Turnbull again, and said that was purely "a matter for Peter".

Dutton later thanked his colleagues for their "considerable support" in the ballot.

"My job is to do everything I can to ensure that we are united and work together", he told reporters. While the margin was clear, Dutton's numbers are strong enough to produce lasting instability and immediate speculation of a second challenge.

Indeed, there was something verging on the unsettling to witness a smile creeping across the familiar death's head of this scourge of asylum seekers, Minister for Immigration and Border Protection from 2014 till 2017, and all-powerful Minister for Home Affairs from past year to this day.

Nick Economou, a political analyst at Monash University in Melbourne, believes lawmakers are abandoning Turnbull because they fear he will lead them to a crushing defeat in the elections.

"If we are fighting amongst ourselves, guess what, when the voters go to the election, they'll mark us down as they should", Mr Laundy said.

Before the ballot, Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg had warned government colleagues that they would lose popularity if they dumped Turnbull.

Mr. Frydenberg said voters were exhausted of governments repeatedly changing their prime ministers.

The disunity came to a head yesterday when Mr Turnbull was forced to shelve plans to embed carbon emissions targets in law after a revolt by fellow Liberal politicians.

The concession avoided having the most conservative government lawmakers voting against the legislation in Parliament, openly undermining his authority.

Turnbull used a shorter run of Newspoll losses as part of his justification to depose Tony Abbott as prime minister in his own party coup in September 2015. "They'll just be bystanders until the election is called".

Unable to risk losing the coalition's paper-thin majority in the House of Representatives, the lower tier of parliament, Turnbull has hacked bits off the package to quiet his critics.
