Maguire or Alderweireld? Rio Ferdinand picks out who Man Utd should sign

Sources close to United insist there is still a chance at least one new player will arrive before the start of the season but there is an acceptance that time is not on their side.

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has urged his former club to back the manager and sign Jose Mourinho's number one target.

Pogba moved to Manchester United in the summer of 2016 for a then-record $121 million, and has been stuck with massive expectations ever since.

Jose Mourinho does not expect anybody to join Manchester United before the transfer deadline.

However, with Mourinho having signed a new contract at the beginning of the year, the club will be forced to pay a hefty sum to remove him from the Old Trafford dugout.

If moves for Maguire and Alderweireld can not be completed before today's 5pm deadline, United may turn to Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng - although that deal would only be for a season-long loan.

Interest from Barcelona means that he may not be a Manchester United player for much longer, but his contributions to the club should not be underestimated.

The England World Cup hero only returned to training on Monday but is still in line to start. The Belgium global is also keen on playing for the Red Devils but the two clubs are not close in their valuation of the player and United have not submitted a formal offer to Spurs.

While optimism is growing at Anfield, the same can not be said at last season's runners-up Manchester United who kick off the new season on Friday at home to Leicester City with a squad that is under-cooked, according to manager Jose Mourinho. A club that's spent the money they've spent in the past few seasons and the players they've got [should be challenging].

"Eventually Axel said: "Do me a favour and finish it as quickly as possible because I really want to go to Dortmund".

Nevertheless, it seems Chelsea held off their rivals just as they did with Willian who was believed to be another target of Mourinho's. "So I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see them challenging for the league this year".

The move was created to ease disruption in the first few weeks of the campaign after a number of high-profile players including Alexis Sanchez, Philippe Coutinho and Virgil van Dijk missed matches at the start of last season due to transfer speculation.

Maguire and Leicester's main goal threat, Jamie Vardy, may not start, having just returned to pre-season training this week after their exertions in Russian Federation.
