Chelsea agree Courtois-Kovacic swap deal with Real Madrid

The 31-year-old only joined Chelsea six months ago, but his 18-month contract means that he has less than one year left on his current deal.

Chelsea have completed the signing of Athletic goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, breaking the world record fee paid for a goalkeeper by parting with a reported £72m.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas emphatically ruled out leaving the club as he said the signing of Thibaut Courtois has not affected his desire to remain at the Bernabeu.

Kepa arrives at Stamford Bridge as the most expensive goalkeeper in footballing history, eclipsing the fee Liverpool spent to recruit Alisson from Roma this summer.

Kepa has signed a seven-year deal after joining from Athletic Bilbao, who confirmed earlier in the day that the 23-year-old's release clause of 80million euros (£72.1m) was activated and his contract terminated.

Kepa played 30 times in La Liga for Bilbao last season and kept seven clean sheets as the Basque side finished 16th in the table.

Speaking after his move, the Croatian explained: 'I haven't trained a lot at Real Madrid because I badly wanted to come to Chelsea so I didn't do much training. Chelsea has made a great bet in taking me in.

Yet the Spain global said he was not disappointed his move to the Bernabéu fell through; nor did he fear that allowing his contract with Athletic to contain a £71.9m release clause would price him out of the market this summer. While the £71m transfer fee may appear exorbitant, constituting a record fee for the club and a world record for a goalkeeper, it may not be as astronomical as first meets the eye.

"I hope I'll be able to adjust and adapt as soon as possible". I've analysed what is best for me so I consider the opportunity presented to me in signing for Chelsea is the best for my future.

The Spain worldwide is officially the world's most expensive goalkeeper after joining from Athletic Bilbao in a £71.6m deal on Wednesday evening.
