But don't call her a hero yet. And while details are still relatively slim about how Kate Kane will make her grand entrance into the Arrowverse, this casting shows that it's being set in motion.

As only a comic book franchise can do, there are actually two Batwoman characters in the current DC Comics "continuity", one which uses the real name Kathy, and the other which uses the real name Kate.

The potential Batwoman series helms from Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros.

Ruby Rose is making history with her latest role as Batwoman, the first openly gay superhero to headline a TV series. The Silver Age Batwoman is best known as Kathy Kane, who was created in order to offset rumors that Batman and Robin were homosexuals.

Orange Is The New Black and John Wick star Ruby Rose has been cast as The Batwoman, in The CW "Arrowverse" series of TV shows.

Kathy Kane was later dropped as a character by DC in 1964 when editor Julius Schwartz decided that he wanted to take the Batman books in a different direction.

In May, the CW announced this year's highly-anticipated Arrowverse crossover would include the Green Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl fighting alongside... "Vampire Diaries" creator Caroline Dries, who will write and executive produce "Batwoman", is gay.

Are you excited to see Rose make her debut as Kate Kane/Batwoman? Though, honestly, I don't know where Doc Wertham could've gotten the idea that a single bachelor and his practically-adult ward-spending their nights traipsing around in tights and carousing with flamboyant men wearing more makeup than the Gabor sisters-were anything more than friends.

The CW was reportedly on the hunt for an out lesbian actress to portray Batwoman and found their ideal heroine in Rose.

Mark Pedowitz, the president of The CW, the U.S. channel which airs the Arrowverse series, said a pilot episode would be filmed at the end of the year, after production on the "crossover" event was finished. "We'll do a pilot for mid-season [and] whether it goes to series, I can not tell you".
