United States reimposing Iran sanctions after quitting nuclear deal

The United States is due to impose new sanctions against Iran on Tuesday meant to cripple its economy, implementing President Donald Trump's decision to break with European allies and exit the 2015 agreement.

Sanctions will also be reimposed on Iran's trade in gold and other precious metals and graphite, aluminum, steel, coal, and software used in industrial processes, the White House said today.

The sanctions are being put back into place as a result of the United States pulling out of the nuclear agreement struck with the regime under President Barack Obama.

The Monday announcement marks the end of a transition period the administration gave companies to wind down contracts with Iran in order to avoid penalties.

This comes after Trump's decision in May to withdraw from the nuclear accord.

In a statement, Trump said the 2015 global accord to freeze Iran's nuclear program in return for lifting sanctions was a "horrible, one-sided deal" and said it left the Iranian government flush with cash to use to fuel conflict in the Middle East.

"To this day, Iran threatens the United States and our allies, undermines the worldwide financial system, and supports terrorism and militant proxies around the world", he said.

Earlier, the Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif has slammed Donald Trump's recent proposal to enter into talks with Iran by calling it nothing but a PR stunt. Shortly after it was negotiated, Republicans in Congress tried, and narrowly failed, to pass a resolution formally disapproving of the executive agreement.

Mr Rouhani urged Mr Trump to "make peace" with Iran on Sunday 22 July.

"Considering the dramatic consequences for USA national security and foreign policy interests, the Trump administration should not be given free reign to plunge the United States into a confrontation with its closest allies and partners".

"I have a suspicion that even if it doesn't come directly, I can easily see in six months the Iranians turning to the Russians and letting the Russians be their channel", to negotiate with Trump, said Ross."Given the Trump-Putin relationship, we can see Russia coming and offering something, opening up a negotiation".

Trump has repeatedly referred to the Iran nuclear deal as the "worst deal ever", "horrible", "laughable", and "defective at its core".

"We deeply regret the re-imposition of sanctions by the USA, due to the latter's withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)", the union's foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, and the foreign ministers of the UK, France and Germany said in a joint statement, using the nuclear deal's technical name. "The United States welcomes the partnership of likeminded nations in these efforts".

"The president has been very clear none of this needs to happen", a senior administration official said Monday on a background call with reporters.

President Donald J. Trump signs an EO on Iran Sanctions in the Green Room at Trump National Golf Club, August 5, 2018, in Bedminster Township, New Jersey. The diplomat noted that fight against terrorism was one of the Iranian forces' tasks in Syria, apart from granting support to the war-torn country's government.

To this point, however, Tehran has been unimpressed with such overtures. "The pressure will not relent while the negotiations go on", said Bolton, one of the administration's main hawks on Iran. Iran's rial now trades over double its government-set rate to the US dollar. "United States hypocrisy knows no bounds".
