Chicago gun violence leaves 11 dead and 70 wounded after bloody weekend

Last week, dozens of protesters temporarily shut down the Windy City's iconic Lake Shore Drive to express their outrage over Chicago's endemic gun violence and call for Emanuel's resignation of the city's mayor.

In the most recent shooting, three people were shot at 29 North Leclaire Ave.

There were six shootings in the city on Friday evening, though none were fatal, and a further 15 people were shot on Saturday, one of whom died.

In three hours beginning at 1.30am, Chicago police records showed 30 people were shot and two killed in 10 incidents.

Police Patrol Chief Fred Waller, addressing the violence in a news conference Sunday, said the shootings reflect "the devastating effects that illegal guns have in our communities".

Nevertheless, Chicago´s official murder count, at more than 320 killings so far this year, was the highest in the country and far eclipsed those of America´s two largest cities - NY and Los Angeles. Later Sunday morning, Jahnae Patterson, 17, was killed and five other people wounded, including an 11-year-old boy in a shooting in the 1300-block of South Millard Avenue.

In at least one incident, shooters opened fire into a crowded street party, Waller said. "We will not, I promise you that we will not be defeated". The victim's ages range from 14 to 24-years-old.

The violence peaked early Sunday, including one shooting in a courtyard in Gresham in the city's south side that wounded eight people, including four teenage girls.

"Certainly CPD [Chicago Police Department] can do better but at the end of the day, the members of CPD don't go to bed with these individuals at night, they don't wake up with them in the morning", Mr Johnson said.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and police Superintendent Eddie Johnson reacted angrily Monday to one of Chicago's bloodiest weekends of the year, calling on neighbors to come forward to help police stem the runaway violence.

Chicago's gun violence has drawn national scrutiny, including from President Donald Trump.

The man suffered gunshot wounds to his body and neck and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

"There are too many guns on the street". "Wednesday we announced a number of businesses that are going to be part of the neighborhood opportunity fund that create the most important part of our neighborhood economy", Emanuel said. "What worries me is in certain areas of the city we begin to normalize these things".
