Stuart Broad takes two early wickets to give England hope at Edgbaston

Curran's innings came just a day after the Surrey left-arm swing bowler's Test-best haul of 4/74 during India's first innings of 274.

Moreover, Ashwin was too good for Stuart Broad when he bowled a flawless in-swinger to the southpaw batsman.

New batsman Pandya played several solid defensive shots before driving Stuart Broad down the ground for a textbook four - a boundary greeted with huge cheers by the large contingent of India fans in the crowd.

While England have had to make do without the talented all-rounder before, either through injury or their own policy decisions, both he and they are now beholden to the outcome of a looming trial.

While Curran does not have the pace of those three, what he does have and what he showcased today was an incredible knack of picking up big wickets.

England collapsed from 216-3 to 287 in the first innings in Birmingham and slipped to 87-7 in the second before Sam Curran's 63 from number eight took them to 180.

Behind Root as he stormed off, Kohli then celebrated by blowing a kiss, mouthing some fruity advice, putting his finger to his lips and adding a "mic-drop" mime - mocking Root's gesture last month, after clinching the one-day worldwide series at Headingley with a second successive hundred. But one thing that really stands out for me is that inner drive and determination from this group of players.

"I m sure that they ll be going away working out how they can play it - as we re working on how to play the off-spin". For cleaning up the tail, something with which England have struggled of late, a spinner who can turn it both ways is invaluable. "But the breeze was pretty good out there, the clouds came in and it started swinging - especially when the lacquer came off the ball".

India needed 84 runs from their last five wickets, with Kohli unbeaten on 43, when they resumed on Saturday morning.

Curran, who was nearly able to call the India captain a teammate when he signed for Surrey, only to pull out of the deal through injury, was unable to knock Kohli off his rhythm late in the day.

Curran has said that he takes inspiration from senior colleague Ben Stokes as he goes about shaping his worldwide career.

"You can't drop Virat Kohli on 21, because he's one of the best players in the world, and he'll capitalise on that - which he did". I spoke to the boys at the start, and said "Just go out there with that belief, desire that you have done the previous two days in the field", and they didn't disappoint.

"But he did nick a lot of balls outside off-stump that didn't carry as well". On another day I could have got him and we could be in a much different position now.

A few that did carry were not taken. Curran, though, is not laying the blame at anyone's feet and believes day three can bring redemption for England.

Three balls later, Stokes had Shami caught behind for a duck.

"So we'll go to bed dreaming about getting Kohli out first thing". "We definitely need to apply ourselves better with the bat, but England came back superbly and we need to take the positives and move forward", added the star batsman.
