Russian Federation names Steven Seagal as special United States envoy
Aug 06, 2018, 09:28
Russian President Vladimir Putin presented a Russian passport to the U.S. actor in 2016, and now Seagal will expand his ties, serving as a goodwill ambassador. And in a 2013 interview with news channel RT, Seagal said he believed Putin "is one of the greatest world leaders, if not the greatest world leader, alive today". The actor has been a very public supporter of Putin, going on television to defend the Russian president over accusations of meddling in the 2016 United States elections. Seagal says: "I'll never, ever falter". Former co-stars have often talked about the actor's violent temper on the set of his movies, which doesn't really bode well for negotiating peace between two countries.
In March of this year, two women who previously accused Steven Seagal of rape and sexual assault stepped forward to offer more detailed accounts of the actor's alleged misconduct.
As for Russian and United States relations now, things are a bit contentious, to say the least.
Seagal thanked the Russian government for his new role, describing the appointment as "a great honor". President Putin, while presenting Seagal a Russian passport in 2016, said that he hoped the gesture would serve as a symbol of how fractious ties between Moscow and Washington were starting to improve. He had this to say. "I take this honour very seriously", he wrote on Twitter.
Russian Foreign Ministry which made the announcement on Facebook late on Saturday said Seagal will be tasked with furthering "Russian-American relations".
The U.S. Intelligence Community had repeatedly stated Russian Federation interfered with the election.
According to the statement, his unpaid posting will be to promote intercontinental relations "in the humanitarian sphere", and will be similar to the United Nations' goodwill ambassador positions.
