Venezuelan President Unharmed After Assassination Attempt By Explosive Drones

Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro has survived an apparent attack on his life during a military parade celebrating the 81st anniversary of the Bolivarian National Guard in the capital, Caracas.

Soldiers at the event were then seen running in different directions before the televised transmission was cut off. There is no official word yet as to what occurred.

Mr Maduro was standing next to his wife Cilia Flores and several high-ranking military officials for the event broadcast on radio and television.

No group has said it was behind the alleged assassination attempt.

Seven National Guard soldiers were injured, Rodriguez added.

Mr Maduro is expected to address the nation soon.

Taking to Twitter after the incident, the country's President said: "I trust the armed force to capture those responsible for the war against the people".

Firefighters near the scene have disputed Mr Rodriguez's version of events.

The country's economic turmoil compares to Germany's after World War I and Zimbabwe's at the beginning of the last decade, International Monetary Fund officials said, adding that Venezuela's economic contraction ranks among the world's deepest in six decades.

Last year, rogue police officer Oscar Perez hijacked a helicopter and fired at government buildings in what he said was an action against a dictator.

Several military personnel who were lined up on Avenue Bolivar during the speech were seen looking up then breaking rank and running.
