Aeromexico plane carrying 101 people crashes in northern Mexico

Torres added that the plane attempted to abort take-off due to bad weather but it was too late.

A Chicago law firm is handling the lawsuit of a teacher from west suburban Northlake who was on the plane returning home from a family vacation. Although 85 have been reported injured with at least two of those being critically so.

"Se confirma que no hubo fallecidos en el accidente del vuelo #AM2431", Gov. Jose Aispuro tweeted, which translates to, "It is confirmed that there were no deaths in the flight accident". "At this moment on behalf of the cabinet, led by Coordinator Rosario Castro, to attend to the injured and cooperate with airport authorities with what has occurred".

But remarkably, no one was killed when the Aeromexico jet came down in Durango, according to the state governor.

It then skidded into a field upright, allowing the escape slides to deploy and passengers and crew to escape before the plane caught fire, he said.

Emergency services, the army and the Red Cross were on the scene. Some of the passengers were able to get off the plane and walk to a nearby highway for help, officials said.

The first images of the crash site shared on social and Mexican media showed a plane partially immersed in flames. However, he said, "the majority of passengers left [the plane] under their own power" and only 37 suffered slight injuries.

"There was a hole right next to us and the plane had broken up, I told my girl "We have to jump over here" and we jumped", she added. Further details were not immediately available. At least 65 passengers were US citizens. They are still being assessed for the extent of the injuries.

The airport operator said preliminary information indicates the adverse weather conditions led to the crash. The plane was headed for Mexico City.

Flight AM2431 was on a domestic flight from Durango to Mexico City when the crash happened.

The Mexico City-bound Embraer 190 jet was nearly full, with 103 on board including two infants and four crew members, when it came down at around 4 pm (21:00 GMT) on Tuesday, authorities said.

Dozens of lightly injured passengers were seen leaving the plane, which was engulfed in gray smoke in a field.
