On Election Interference, Trump And His Advisers Sound Completely Out Of Step

And Thursday's briefing came on the third day of the trial of Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign manager who used to work for pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine and has been charged with tax and bank fraud on some of those earnings.

Wray told reporters that compared to 2016, in 2018, "We are not yet seeing the same kind of efforts to specifically target election infrastructure", but that other efforts to influence public opinion continue.

After painting a scary picture of Russian Federation conducting a "pervasive messaging campaign... to try to weaken and divide the United States", and "undermine our democratic values", Coats acknowledged that it's "not the kind of robust campaign that we assessed in the 2016 election".

Mr Bolton also wrote to Senate Democrats, saying Mr Trump "has not and will not tolerate interference in America's system of representative government". "We also know the Russians tried to hack into and steal information from candidates and government officials alike".

Homeland Security chief Kirstjen Nielsen said democracy "is in the crosshairs".

"Glad to see the White House finally do something about election security - even if it's only a press conference".

Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) said in a statement later that Bolton's response didn't address their letter's concerns that the Trump administration "fully implement the sanctions on Russia that Congress already passed, extradite the 12 Russian government officials indicted by Special Counsel Mueller, and commit to protecting diplomats and other US personnel - both past and present".

"We implore the administration to take this very real and imminent threat to our elections and our democracy more seriously", said a statement from Schumer and other Democratic leaders.

Bolton said that in an expanded meeting with top advisers in Finland after the two leaders met privately, Putin said that election meddling was "the first issue" that Trump raised with him.

Mr Mueller - a respected former Federal Bureau of Investigation director - is investigating whether the Trump campaign aided or abetted an attempt by Russian Federation to sway the 2016 presidential election, or tried to cover up the conspiracy.

Democrats and Republicans have lobbed criticisms at the Trump administration over their response to election interference.

The group appearance by intelligence officials comes after Trump led his first meeting of the National Security Council last week to discuss how to combat interference.

He added, the current cyber threat is not just an issue during an election cycle, but an ongoing effort to undermine the American people.

Mr Trump has insisted there was no collusion between his campaign and Russian Federation in an attempt to sway the 2016 election in his favour. "But if anyone helped Russian Federation to hack/steal they deserve justice", said Republican operative Ari Fleischer.

He cited the fact he was a senior adviser to Mr Trump's presidential campaign, and appointed Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to oversee the investigation instead.
