Duterte’s Destruction Rages: 68 More Cars Crushed In Philippines

The contraband vehicles, which reportedly worth a total of 298 million Philippine pesos ($5.6 million), were destroyed by the government on Monday in Sta Ana, in the northern province of Cagayan, Rappler reports.

The luxury cars included nine Mercedez Benz, seven BMW, five Porsche, 13 Nissan, one Jaguar, 10 Toyota, two Ford, one Lamborghini (Gallardo), two Mazda, three Hyundai, and a Honda, while the eight big bikes include Harley Davidson, Triump and Chopper.

Before that smuggled vehicles sold at auction and the new method, according to the President of the Philippines, is a legitimate and cheap - it encourages foreign partners to legal businesses.

The relentless crash of the cars was personally chaired by the President - Rodrigo Duterte. President Duterte watched sitting in safety glasses and a white construction hat.

The government maintains that it must destroy the vehicles, rather than sell them to raise funds, because the used auto market is rife with corruption and ends up benefitting numerous same people who were involved in the smuggling operations. But in the Philippines, authorities are tackling something more serious: smugglers who attempt to import luxury cars without paying taxes.

However, Duterte has made it clear he would rather destroy the cars than have the government profit from crime. That doesn't sit with Duterte's policies of fighting crime and corruption.

The president's war on drugs has seen thousands of people killed since he took office in 2016, with human rights groups saying numerous killings are orchestrated by the police.

THIS IS the moment 68 luxury cars and motorbikes were crushed by a bulldozer, following a crackdown on corruption in the Philippines.
