Hundreds of Trump supporters and foes gather early ahead of Tampa rally

President Trump renewed a call Tuesday night for voter ID in the USA, pointing to examples of Democrats pushing to allow non-citizens to vote.

President Donald Trump is jumping into the Florida governor's race by endorsing GOP candidate Ron DeSantis for the job. He was trying to tell supporters that tighter laws would stop people who aren't USA citizens from voting, and in his argument added that people need IDs for most other things.

Trump said many Americans need a picture ID to make purchases among other things, but not at the polls.

To be clear, American citizens do not need a picture ID to buy basic groceries.

Shoppers do need IDs to buy alcohol, some medicines and cigarettes.

DeSantis, who now represents Florida's 6th Congressional district in the House, is a loyal Trump supporter and has been described by the president as a "warrior" for his commitment.

"We're going to have tremendous border security that will include the wall", he said.

Democrats "don't want to give Trump any victory", he said.

Trump said he spends a lot of time in Florida and only sees Nelson when it is election season.

"I appreciate your support, Mr. President, but I appreciate even more the leadership you're showing for our great country", DeSantis said as he appeared onstage with Trump.

Scott didn't attend the rally but joined the president earlier at a roundtable event.

The 30-second clip is narrated by DeSantis' wife Casey, and highlights the importance of Trump in a heated primary with Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam.

Putnam, a and former congressman, has run a more traditional campaign for governor, barnstorming the state with campaign events aimed at building upon his family's deep ties to the state. He says, "The time has come for voter ID like everything else".

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, 34 states have laws that require voters to show identification when voting. "But we're turning it around".
