Ohio reports first human West Nile virus case in 2018

The Louisiana Department of Health reported two cases of West Nile Fever in East Baton Rouge and Ouachita parishes.
Public health officials and mosquito control authorities monitor West Nile by trapping mosquitoes, testing samples from dead birds and other animals, and testing blood from "sentinel chickens".
In comparison, the department reported seven West Nile virus cases at this time past year.
The Will County Health Department Environmental Health Division operates 14 mosquito traps that have collected more than 190 samples this season.
Most people who test positive for the disease will either have no symptoms or mild flu-like signs. Mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus are more likely to bite during the evening, night, and early morning.
No human cases have been reported in the parish, but Bragg urges all residents to continue protecting themselves from being bitten. Some individuals, including the elderly and persons with compromised immune systems, WNV can cause serious illness that affects the central nervous system.
West Nile is highly seasonal, increasing through the month of August, peaking around Labor Day.
