CVS pharmacist fired for refusing to fill hormone prescription for trans woman

Hilde Hall felt "elated" to finally start hormone treatment after a trip to her doctor in April ― until an Arizona pharmacist refused to fill one of her prescriptions at CVS.

Hall said he was eventually able to fill the prescription at a Walgreens pharmacy location, but claimed CVS's corporate complaint line ignored his complaints multiple times.

Additionally, Hall also wrote that she is one of the lucky ones, explaining that, unlike some other transgender individuals, she has a great support system and left the encounter physically unscathed.in terms of her support system and how that encounter might have played out for someone else. The pharmacist "kept asking, loudly and in front of other CVS staff and customers, why I was given the prescriptions", Hall wrote.

Hall wrote that she was "embarrassed and distressed" and nearly started crying in the middle of the store.

Hall had received three prescriptions April 24 from her doctor, who specializes in hormone therapy, she said. "I just froze and worked on holding back the tears", she wrote.

Hall said she was mortified and distressed, adding that the pharmacist wouldn't hand the prescription note back to her so she could take it to another drugstore.

This incident comes less than a month after another Arizona woman said a Walgreens pharmacist refused to fill her miscarriage prescription due to his "moral objection". So, she chose to file a complaint to the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy on Thursday, insisting something had to be done. On Friday, CVS released a statement, which said the pharmacist had been fired.

"The conduct of the pharmacist, who is no longer employed by CVS, violated company policies and does not reflect our values or our commitment to inclusion, nondiscrimination and the delivery of outstanding patient care", CVS spokesman Michael DeAngelis said in an email.

Pop culture junkie. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever". The pharmacist said it was against his personal beliefs.

Arizona is one of six states that shield health professionals who refuse to serve customers or patients on religious or moral grounds, according to the National Women's Law Center.

"CVS Health extends its honest apologies to Ms. Hall for her experience at our pharmacy in Fountain Hills, Arizona last spring".

Both pharmacists' actions were justified under Arizona law.

I went straight from my doctor to the CVS in my town, Fountain Hills, Arizona, which is a suburb of Phoenix.

CVS, however, fired its employee and apologized to Hall on Friday. "If CVS does not take steps, like written policies and employee training, to protect its transgender customers from discrimination, we may explore litigation". "But many other transgender people are not as fortunate as I am".
