Miscommunication Reigns After Trump's Meeting with Putin

President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin blamed forces within the United States on Thursday for marring what they called the success of their first summit, with Trump saying he looked forward to their second meeting.

At a post-summit news conference in Helsinki that generated a political crisis for Trump, the president said Putin was "strong" in denying Russian election interference, and he seemed to take Putin's word over that of us intelligence officials who are pursuing criminal charges against Russian operatives.

Then on Thursday, the White House said Trump "disagrees" with Putin's offer to allow US questioning of 12 Russians who have been indicted for election interference in exchange for Russian interviews with the former USA ambassador to Russia and other Americans the Kremlin accuses of unspecified crimes.

Trump himself tweeted: "The Summit with Russian Federation was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media".

American intelligence agencies concluded past year that Russian Federation carried out a campaign of hacking and propaganda targeting the 2016 US election, seeking to sow discord, disparage Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and help Trump's candidacy. "It is incredibly valuable to the people of the United States of America that President Putin and President Trump continue to engage in dialogue to resolve the hard issues that our countries face between each other".

A group of former President Obama and President George W. Bush officials are also under the impression Gross does not need to be grilled on Capitol Hill.

Trump said both he and Putin had spoken to Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu "and would like to do certain things with respect to Syria having to do with the safety of Israel".

"OK", he said and took a deep breath before adding: "That's going to be special".

The Russian ambassador said Moscow is ready to discuss a proposed new meeting between Putin and Trump, Interfax said.

Illustrating the gulf between Trump and some of his own advisers, Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said on Thursday that he did not know what Trump and Putin discussed in their private meeting.

Moments before the vote, the White House rebuked its openness to Putin's offer. "Well, you're right, I don't know what happened at that meeting", Coats said in response to a question at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado.

In a rebuke to the president, the Senate - controlled by Trump's fellow Republicans - unanimously approved a resolution expressing congressional opposition to any USA officials being questioned with Russian officials.

There has been no word from Russian Federation about a second Trump-Putin meeting. "Trump is bruised by the idea that Russian election meddling taints his victory, those close to him say, and can't concede the fact that Russia did try to interfere in the election, regardless of whether it impacted the outcome".

"Russia was always open to such proposals", ambassador Anatoly Antonov said, The Associated Press reported. President Putin has rejected the charge. In a similar incident, Trump offered a simple "no" after being asked by a reporter if Russian Federation was "still targeting" the United States.
