Cape Town - Netflix has released a first look of Olivia Colman in The Crown.

EveningStandard reports Helena Bonham Carter will take over from Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret while Tobias Menzies will follow in Matt Smith's footsteps as Prince Philip.

Fan reaction to the image was bittersweet, as the show's devotees welcomed Colman to the role, while simultaneously mourning the end of Claire Foy's celebrated turn as the younger queen.

Netflix's The Crown has, since its inception, deemed itself a royal joy of a series. Claire Foy spent two seasons stealing the show as Elizabeth II, and now, it's Olivia Coleman's turn.

"I've known for a really long time and I've been excited for a really long time", Foy said of Colman stepping into the role of Queen. "The grown-ups put us [Olivia and Claire] in touch, so I could ask her about it and she was just lovely - she's one of the sweetest people ever and she's brilliant".

Her predecessor Foy said: 'She doesn't need any advice from me, she knows what she's doing. Camilla Parker Bowles, the current wife of Prince Charles, the Queen's eldest son, is expected to appear in the upcoming season.

The image shows the queen sipping a nice cuppa and wearing her trademark pearls.

Season 3 will see a bit of a shakeup as the show recasts the major players in order to tackle the queen's later years.

Season three is now filming and will see it premiere on Netflix in 2019. Beginning more or less where the last season ended, Season 3 will cover the 1960s and 70s.
