Ex-Aztec Kawhi Leonard will be traded by Spurs to Raptors

It is hard to determine which team won this trade, but with this upcoming 2018-2019 season approaching, both superstars will have to step up and take a leadership role on their respective teams in order to compete with the talent various National Basketball Association teams have accumulated. Neither team had officially confirmed the deal Wednesday, but The Associated Press, ESPN and other outlets reported that a trade agreement was in place. He played for only one month before missing the remainder of the season.

In DeRozan, the Spurs acquired a 4-time All-Star who just finished arguably his best season as a pro. The Philadelphia 76ers were reportedly unwilling to include Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid or Markelle Fultz in a deal for Leonard, instead offering up their own collection of draft picks. DeRozan's current contract lasts until 2021. Green joined San Antonio in 2010 and averaged 9.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 520 contests with the Silver and Black. It would prove to be one of the franchise's most brilliant moves as he quickly blossomed into a franchise player under Gregg Popovich's watch.

Meanwhile, although the Raptors and Spurs are believed to be in deep negotiations, a potential deal may have reached a roadblock. Leonard, who's arguably a top three player in the league when healthy, certainly would be able to fill that role next to James.

Getty Kawhi Leonard is headed to Toronto. Last week Las Vegas odds dubbed Toronto the favorite in picking up the San Antonio player. Negotiations between San Antonio and Toronto started to heat up about the trade two weeks ago, the sources said.

The Raptors made a decision to take a risk on trading for Leonard, in a deal that could end up being a one-year rental for the All-Star forward.

If he leaves, he could sign a four-year, $141 million deal with a team with the available salary-cap space, per Woj.

Mayor John Tory spoke about DeRozan, who led the Raptors in scoring in each of the last five seasons, at a press conference on Wednesday.
