The most popular accounts have more than 100 million followers, and Donald Trump is far down the list with 53.1 million.

Twitter said Wednesday it would begin removing locked accounts from follower counts across profiles globally.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto are among the casualties of the ongoing war on dormant and fake followers by social media giant Twitter.

The singer emerged from the purge with 107 million followers on Thursday, three million fewer than the previous day, The New York Times reported.

A Twitter audit carried out in March 2018 by Twiplomacy, a platform that assists organisations and governments to improve their digital strategy, claimed that more than 50% of followers of profiles of major leaders, including that of Modi, are likely to be fake.

However, Vijaya Gadde, from Twitter's trust and safety team made it clear that most of these accounts still have real people behind them. BJP chief Amit Shah also saw a drop of about 30,000 followers (11.3 million) since the drive started.

Katy Perry has maintained her place as the most followed person on Twitter. Shah Rukh Khan lost nearly 3.5 lakh followers (35.7 million) while Amitabh Bachchan registered an even bigger loss, at over 4 lakh (34.5 million).

Perry and Rihanna lost a combined 5 million Twitter followers.

"Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate", said Twitter in a blog.

The average user was told to expect a drop of about four followers or fewer, while the more followed account holders were warned it could be a lot higher.

The microblogging site explained that it has been locking accounts when it detected sudden changes in account behaviour. Mr. Gandhi's account, @RahulGandhi, lost over 13,000 followers from 72.23 lakh on Thursday to 72.21 lakh on Friday.

If the owner doesn't respond and reset their password, Twitter locks the account.

Obama lost more than 2 million followers - dropping from 104 million to 101 million - Thursday afternoon as the social media network continued to purge inactive and locked accounts.
