Republicans praise Page's testimony one day after battle with Strzok

Two Republican congressmen, Reps.

It didn't take long for the hearing to explode.

House Judiciary Chairman Bob W. Goodlatte (R-Va.) cocked an eye at Strzok's claim of neutrality in the probes of Hillary Clinton's emails and the Trump campaign.

"I don't appreciate having an FBI agent with an unprecedented level of animus working on two major investigations during 2016", Gowdy said.

For many viewers watching from home, either viewpoint was overshadowed by the stunning display of congressional dysfunction as the hearing descended into shouting matches between lawmakers and between Republicans and the witness.

Strzok was on the Hill Thursday and answered questions from members of the House Judiciary Committee for more than 10 hours. I would actually say that she probably went the opposite way. "I believe I am here voluntarily".

"I don't take questions from CNN". But the tone was set.

He admitted in congressional testimony and in documents revealed by the Department of Justice that he sent a variety of text messages to Page in which he referred to the current President of the United States as "a f*cking idiot", while Page called Trump a "loathsome human". He pointed in particular to Trump's attacks on the Khans, a Gold Star family who spoke at the Democratic National Convention around that time. He said the text, written late at night and off-the-cuff, reflected his belief that Americans would not stomach such "horrible, disgusting behaviour" by the presidential candidate.

"I was one of a handful of people who knew the details of Russian election interference and its possible connections with members of the Trump campaign", Strzok told the lawmakers, but "exposing that information never crossed my mind". "So, I take great offence, and I take great disagreement to your assertion of what that was or wasn't".

Strzok was pressed by numerous Republicans on his texts and his assertion that his political beliefs did not affect his Federal Bureau of Investigation work.

When his speech concluded, Democrats in the room applauded.

"Peter Strzok's testimony was a disgrace". They argue that it has been selectively leaked and described to impugn him. "The Trump administration does not approach this mission lightly, and we intend to continue our good faith efforts to reunify families". Finally, after months of waiting, Strzok got his chance to address that matter - and delivered a scorching monologue fit for the climax of an Aaron Sorkin script.

Strzok expressed little regret for the most controversial text exchange with Page. That agent, Strzok, despised Trump. Strzok asked when Issa asked him to repeat one message.

"Sir, did you not, was it not intelligible?"

"OK, sir. Sure, " Strzok shot back snidely. "Okay sir. Sure, happy to indulge you".

The difference between the lines of questioning between Republicans and Democrats was, as usual, stark.

"If I could give you a Purple Heart, I would", said Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN).

That meant Justice Department investigators could access all their messages, including the ones in which they criticized Trump and appeared to discuss how they might use their powers to keep him from being elected.

"Lisa Page has finally agreed to appear before the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees for a transcribed interview tomorrow", Goodlatte said in a statement.

"Let me underscore: These are not allegations, these are admissions, " Cummings said.

At one point, Rep. Louie Gohmert, a Texas Republican, invoked Strzok's personal life by alluding to the fact the texts were exchanged while he and Page were in a relationship.
