Ontario woman becomes accidental vehicle thief after key fob mix-up

The key she returned was of a black Nissan Infinity and not the Sentra she had rented.

Police are advising drivers who have cars that use fobs to not leave them in the auto as this makes them much easier to steal, even if it is accidentally.

When the dots got connected in his mind, the manager drove the woman to the Walmart where her rented Nissan was still parked and called the police.

The Infiniti's owner reported his SUV stolen and not long after showed up to the same Enterprise to rent a loaner to replace it temporarily. Upon exiting the store, she climbed in a black Nissan - the vehicle was open and the key's were in the ignition - and drove home.

Two weeks later, when the woman tried to return that very same vehicle, the manager clued in.

According to police in Cornwall, the mixup was only discovered after the woman tried to return the auto, which had been reported stolen, to the rental company she had got the original vehicle from. Unfortunately, instead of her vehicle, she had gotten into another black auto.

She then took the auto to a local Walmart, around the same time the man took his black Infiniti to the same vehicle park. Both vehicles had keyless starters, and the owner of the QX50, an elderly man, had apparently left his own in the auto.

"The woman spoke to the manager and commented about how unkept [sic] the inside of the vehicle was and the fact that there was a set of golf clubs in it as well", the post read.

Maybe the golf clubs in the trunk should have tipped her off, but an Ontario woman didn't realize she was driving a vehicle she'd accidentally stolen for two weeks. Yes, the cops were involved, but luckily, they chose not to arrest or press charges against the woman.

At the end of the two weeks, the woman returned the auto back to the rental company, but was met with confused faces.

The woman contacted police and explained how she had accidentally taken an Infinity and driven around in it for two weeks.

Police described the incident as a "happy ending to a complicated vehicle rental" and warned drivers over electronic key fobs.

"This isn't something you see everyday, but it is something that could happen", Stephanie MacRae, a spokesperson with the Cornwall Community Police Service, was quoted in the Post. When both, the manager and the woman reached the Walmart parking lot, the rental vehicle was still parked at the same spot where it had been parked two weeks before.
