This means a lot of people could lose followers.

Starting Thursday, Twitter has been locking fictitious accounts for bulk tweeting, posting large number of unsolicited replies, or sharing links with misleading information. Meanwhile, Mr. Obama lost about 2 million, leaving him with 101 million overall.

Twitter's official account on the social network was not spared from the purge as it shed 7.5 million fake accounts to drop from 62.85 million to 55.35 million as at press time.

Chairman PITB, Umar Saif lost a whopping 200k followers.

"Follower counts are a visible feature, and we want everyone to have confidence that the numbers are meaningful and accurate".

The social-media company warned on Wednesday that its crackdown on fake accounts means users will have fewer followers.

Former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said Thursday that Twitter "removed 4,000 of my followers" as the social networking site purged fake accounts - including 300,000 reportedly from President Donald Trump's feed - that were disabled because of suspicious activity. They specified that they would be removing locked accounts from follower counts across profiles globally, so we were to expect a drop in follower counts today.

President Uhuru Kenyatta retired to bed on Thursday night with more followers on Twitter than he woke up to on Friday.

Twitter announced on Wednesday that it would no longer include "locked" accounts in follower numbers in an effort to boost user trust in the service.

Well, the world champion in boxing got 123k followers knocked out from his list which I would definitely call a big loss for the celeb and now he has 2.2M followers.

Well, it is now happening and people have started noticing the drop in follower accounts. "We understand this may be hard for some, but we believe accuracy and transparency make Twitter a more trusted service for public conversation", Vijaya Gadde, Twitter's Legal, Policy and Trust & Safety Lead, said in a blog post.
