Liverpool fans will be pleased by Dejan Lovren’s continued form

Lovren can have his off days - he was terrorised by Romelu Lukaku at Old Trafford in March too - but there is something to be said for a player who has reached both the Champions League final and World Cup final within three months.

"I think people should recognise that I'm one of the best defenders in the world".

"From my point of view, people said I had a hard season but I don't agree", said the 29-year-old.

Lovren came in for criticism in the first-half of last season, in particular when he was hooked half-an-hour into a 4-1 defeat by Tottenham at Wembley.

He wrote for the Irish Independent: "I give Lovren credit for rebuilding his Liverpool career after that and there is no doubt that the arrival of Virgil van Dijk in the January transfer window helped him to put in a better second half of the season, but I'm still not convinced he can relied upon every time he takes to the field".

Zlatko Dalic's side came from behind to beat England 2-1 after extra time at Luzhniki Stadium on Wednesday, with Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic scoring the goals after Kieran Trippier's opener.

Lovren, who has featured in all six of Croatia's fixtures at this summer's tournament, added: "This is something we will never forget".

"People are crying, they are happy in our country - this is something historical for us", Lovren said. We showed our character, we showed that we deserved to be in the final and people should respect us. We couldn't control the ball or control situations.

"But we enjoy to play against big teams, as we showed against Argentina, and have nothing to lose".

"Modric is not one of the best, [he is] the best midfield player in the world and if we win this World Cup he deserves the Ballon d'Or".

"After all we went through, we deserve to be here", he said.
