‘Game of Thrones’ earns a leading 22 Emmy Award nominations

HBO, which came out on top last year, trailed just behind Netflix this time around with 108 nominations, down three from last year's 111 noms.

"We congratulate our creative partners on their unprecedented success today, garnering Netflix a leading 112 nominations", said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. Trailing were broadcaster NBC with 78 nominees and cable network FX with 50. That's up more than 20 from 2017, when it scored 91 nominations. "The continued growth of the industry has provided opportunities for acclaimed new programs to emerge, while allowing last season's breakthrough programs to thrive".

Additionally, Netflix also made gains in the reality space with the Queer Eye revival, which landed multiple noms, including best Structured Reality TV series 14 years after winning a Best Reality Show Emmy. "We're grateful to all our nominees for making this the eighth year we've had 100 nominations or more". It is also present in the categories for Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress.

Similarly, HBO's fall to second place in the overall Emmy nomination tally shouldn't be used as an excuse to start spewing hot takes about a Network in Transition.

Competing with Moss, Oh and Russell for lead drama actress are Claire Foy for "The Crown", Tatiana Maslay of "Orphan Black" and Evan Rachel Wood of "Westworld". Next year, Veep will be back in competition for its final season, while Sharp Objects will nearly surely give HBO something it sorely lacked this Emmy season - a major player in the limited-series category.

Netflix's Emmy ascend punctuates the streaming upstart's enormous push.

For the most part, though, this year's categories mark a pretty fair representation of TV's best and brightest, while adding drama to the battle that's been brewing to its two foremost bidders for awards prestige. It's easy to imagine HBO jumping back into the nomination lead next year, and not at all hard to envision a world where Amazon or Apple makes a run for the top spot a few years after that.
