The intensifying heat was expected to trigger thunderstorms on Wednesday, with authorities warning new landslides could be set off on mountainsides saturated with water.

The government is also focusing on restoring the roads and the water supply.

Thousands of homes were still without clean water and electricity.

"I'm anxious there could be a significant impact on production, consumption and tourism", Toshiro Miyashita, Bank of Japan's Fukuoka branch manager, who oversees the Kyushu region, told a news conference. "I'm so sad I lost many books, I can never find them anymore".

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said 54,000 personnel had been mobilized for search-and-rescue efforts, NHK reported.

A couple was found dead in a farmhouse buried in a mudslide in Kagoshima prefecture Monday, while earlier a woman who was reported as missing after getting trapped in her vehicle was found dead, Kyodo news service reported.
