Williams back in Wimbledon semi-finals

Serena Williams stayed on track for an eighth Wimbledon title as she fought back to beat Italian Camila Giorgi 3-6 6-3 6-4 in a fiercely contested quarter-final on Tuesday.

Williams lost the first 6-3 on Centre Court.

But Pliskova, who reached number one in the rankings after Wimbledon a year ago, found some fight and capitalised on a loose game by Bertens that allowed her to break back and level the set at 4-4.

She has won 19 straight matches at the All England Club and will appear in her 11th semifinal.

Bertens now faces No. 13 Julia Goerges, who beat Donna Vekic 6-3, 6-2.

"She was moving me very much".

She hit one at 122 miles per hour against Giorgi, delivered six of her seven aces in the final set, and won 44 of the last 54 points she served. Meanwhile, today will be Jelena Ostapenko and Angelique Kerber's first meeting.

Williams opted not to challenge when she saw a shot called long, although Hawk-Eye proved it was actually in, and Giorgi went on to bring up two break points, with Serena then mis-hitting wide to surrender the game.

Federer needed just 16 minutes to win the first set and the Swiss never looked back. But this is only my fourth tournament back (so) I don't feel pressure, I don't feel like I have to win this.

"I don't know what I did", Williams said in a post-game press conference.

Still, Kerber had some trouble closing things out.

She figured out Giorgi's strong serve, avoided any break points and had just four unforced errors.

But the 36-year-old shared over the weekend that despite a strict schedule to be as present as possible for her daughter, she still managed to miss out on baby Alexis's first steps while getting in some training for Wimbledon.

Williams, who has a kind run through to the semi-finals, will next take on Camila Giorgi of Italy. A blistering forehand return gave her three break points in the third game, and she snatched the first with an outstanding off-balance backhand down the line.

The All England Club seeded her there as a nod to all of her past success at the grass-court major, including titles the last two times she entered, in 2015 and 2016. "Everybody has the same chances to win that match, and I'm looking forward to it".

The last time two Germans made the semifinals of a Slam was at Roland Garros in 1993.
