The most interesting late development in Trump's Supreme Court derby

Multiple sources tell ABC News that as of Sunday, the final four individuals Trump is considering for the vacancy are Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Coney Barrett, Raymond Kethledge and Thomas Hardiman. They were all on a list of 25 names that were vetted by the conservative groups Federalist Society and Heritage Foundation. But there are red state Senate Democrats who are up for re-election in November like Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Joe Manchin of WV and Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota. Some of those victories were made possible by the swing vote of Anthony Kennedy, whose retirement handed Trump a golden ideological opening.

Cornyn spoke shortly after Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said any of Trump's likely nominees poses a threat to the Affordable Care Act and a woman's right to have an abortion.

Republicans in the Senate need to be completely united on the pick, because of the delicate nature of their majority. Sen. A former White House aide under Bush who previously worked for Kenneth Starr, the independent counsel who investigated Democratic former President Bill Clinton in the 1990s, he faced a long confirmation battle when Bush nominated him to his current post. Sherpas to the nominee will act as a guide during the confirmation process - helping to set up meetings with lawmakers on Capitol Hill and preparing for the eventual confirmation hearing.

McConnell's office has stressed that it took about two months each to get Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Gorsuch through, and they warn Kavanaugh's background and work in Washington could slow confirmation.

The White House hopes Kyl's close ties to Senate Republicans will help smooth the path for Mr. Trump's eventual selection to win confirmation. He is hoping to replicate his successful announcement of Justice Neil Gorsuch past year.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., declared "all Republicans should embrace" the reported candidates for Supreme Court justice under consideration by President Donald Trump.

Democrats girded for a fight as Trump kept up the suspense surrounding his shortlist of four possibles, all with solid right-wing credentials, ahead of the televised announcement to be made in prime time from the White House. He was the first in his family to go to college, at the University of Notre Dame, then worked as a taxi driver to finance his legal education at Georgetown Law School.

Hardiman, 53, has served on the Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals since 2007, having been appointed by Republican former President George W. Bush, after four years as a U.S. district judge in western Pennsylvania.

Kethledge serves as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit in Cincinnati.

"I do think the president has to think about who is the easiest to get confirmed here", added Sen.

Barrett - a longtime Notre Dame Law School professor who became a federal appeals judge last fall - excited social conservatives with her testimony when she was questioned about her Roman Catholic faith in her nomination hearings a year ago.

Democrats see the seat being vacated by Justice Kennedy, a conservative judge who sometimes sided with the court's liberal wing, as critical to maintaining abortion rights and key provisions of former President Barack Obama's healthcare plan.
