Death toll in Japanese flooding climbs to over 100

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe canceled an overseas trip because of the disaster, a ruling party source said.

"The washing machine, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, PC - they're all destroyed", she said as she cleaned her two-story house.

The rain began late last week as the remnants of a typhoon fed into a seasonal rainy front, with humid, warm air from the Pacific making it still more active - a pattern similar to one that set off flooding in southwestern Japan exactly a year ago that killed dozens.

Authorities in Japan raised the death toll to 73, 63 missing and seven wounded as a result of the torrential rainfall over a large part of the country, causing severe floods and landslides. According to Japan's public broadcaster NHK, 78 people have been confirmed dead, eight people sustained serious injuries and at least 57 people are unaccounted for, reports Xinhua news agency.

"Around 1,000 people were seeking rescue by Sunday morning, but we don't yet have a complete picture of the disaster, which is enormous", Mutsunari Imawaka, a spokesman for the prefecture's disaster management office, told AFP.

"I'm a secondhand book seller", Ono said.

The assessment of casualties is hard because of the widespread area affected by the rain, flooding and landslides.

The agency has warned that Japan's Kinki region, which includes Kyoto, Hyogo and Osaka prefectures, could be particularly hard-hit by the downpour, escalating the risk of floods, landslides, lightning and tornadoes.

The rescue operations have seen local municipalities enlist the help of the SDF as the ferocity of the storm and the torrential rain have caused the most amount of deaths seen here from such weather in recent decades. Military paddle boats and helicopters were bringing people to dry land.

"There are many cases of disconnected water supply", he said, adding that officials were trying to provide relief so people would have access to drinking and bath water.

Another resident, 82-year-old Saburo Yokoyama, said he was horrified when he saw floodwater flowing just outside his house. "The rescue teams are doing their utmost", he said.

"We can not take baths, the toilet doesn't work and our food stockpile is running low", said Yumeko Matsui, whose home in the city of Mihara has been without water since Saturday.

21 were killed in the Ehime prefecture.
