Hurricane Beryl Is Tiny, Unpredictable

Beryl's size was still small and there was much uncertainty in predicting the hurricane's intensity because of its size, the agency said.

On Friday, the National Hurricane Center upgraded a tropical storm in the central Atlantic to Hurricane Beryl, with top wind speeds of 80 miles per hour.

It said Beryl is now a weak Category 1 hurricane, moving west at 14 miles per hour. As of now, the system is expected to remain offshore and no watches or warnings have been issued. Forecasters say it is unlikely to have much impact on the island, which is still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Maria past year.

The depression was forecast to become a tropical storm on Saturday, with gradual strengthening expected through Monday.

Beryl is moving towards the west near 15 miles per hour or 24 km/h.

"At 11am, Hurricane Beryl was located near latitude 10.7 degrees north and longitude 46.5 degrees west or about 913 miles east south-east of Dominica".

"A faster westward to west-northwestward motion is expected to begin over the weekend and continue through early next week", the NHC said.

Beryl is a very compact hurricane.

The National Hurricane Center is giving this system an 80 percent chance for development through the weekend.

Puerto Rico, which just finished restoring power to all of its municipalities on July 1 - 284 days after Maria made landfall - is simply not ready for another storm. According to the NHC, those along the North Carolina and SC coasts should monitor the progress of this system during the next several days.

Berg said forecasters aren't expecting it to move inland, "but it could get close enough to the coast to cause some impacts like wind and heavy rain".
