The number of heat-related deaths in Montreal was pegged at six on Tuesday. That rain may turn into a full-out thunderstorm, so plan your outdoor activities accordingly.

The city is in the midst of an "extreme heat event", Environment Canada said in its warning on Sunday.

The national weather agency says humidex values will climb back up to 40 C or higher on Wednesday and Thursday. The Atlantic region's heat wave is expected to break midweek, and Southern Ontario's should only last until Friday.

Montreal health officials say 11 people have died since the intense heat set in over the weekend, with health authorities in the Eastern Townships region east of Montreal attributing another four deaths to the sweltering temperatures. However, daytime highs in the low 30s will continue Tuesday through Thursday.

Canada Day was supposed to start out sunny in the morning, turning to a mix of sun and cloud in the afternoon, with a 30 per cent chance of showers.

Toronto's Medical Officer of Health extended the city's heat warning until further notice over the weekend. Areas near the lake shores will be cooler.

People at risk of heat-related illnesses include those with chronic illnesses, people with limited mobility or certain mental health illnesses, infants and young children, people on certain medications, and the homeless. "And also do not forget to make sure you don't leave any people or pets in your auto, as temperatures will rise dramatically within minutes".
