The Dallas Mavericks Hasten Rebuild with Luka Doncic

Doncic, arguably the best player in the 2018 NBA Draft class, is one of the most proven prospects in recent memory. The Mavericks are also sending a lottery-protected first-round pick in 2019 to Atlanta.

Luka Doncic shook Commissioner Adam Silver's hand in an Atlanta Hawks hat, but was traded to the Dallas Mavericks shortly after. Doncic and Smith will be some excellent rebuilding blocks.

The Dallas Mavericks looked all the way to Slovenia for the player they hope can be their next European superstar.

Slovenian sensation Luka Doncic didn't have to wait long to find out where his new home would be, as the Atlanta Hawks selected the global star with the 3rd overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Robinson dominated at Boston College but there were definitely players with more upside than him.

In 174 EuroLeague games, Doncic averaged 9.2 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per.

We're very fortunate. Luka Doncic is the guy we targeted in this draft if there was any way possible to do it. ... "They really wanted me, and they were very, very nice", the 19-year-old said.

Then he was shipped to Dallas for the 5th overall pick and future draft considerations.

Doncic was named as the Euroleague MVP, Euroleague Final Four MVP and the ACB Liga MVP. "I just want to learn so much about him".

His lengthy European season kept him from working out for teams but he knew the Mavericks were interested in having him on their team for what's expected to be Dirk Nowitzki's final National Basketball Association season.

"This means the world to me", Ayton said.

And the Mavericks came away with a solid haul, including Luka Doncic.

Dallas swapped picks late in the second round with Philadelphia and got Dayton's Kostas Antetokounmpo, the younger brother of Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The reigning champions Golden State Warriors, who have beaten the Cavs in three of the last four Finals, added shooting guard Jacob Evans with the 28th pick.

Uncertainty exists as to which team will end up selecting Doncic, but many comparisons to James stem in part from similarities in their development. But as ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Tuesday, Doncic started to separate himself in the Hawks' internal draft conversation.
