In farewell to U.S. shoppers, Toys 'R' Us urges 'Play on!'

The UK branches of the iconic toy store have already closed, after massive fire sales, and on Friday the final U.S. stores close their doors for good.

The iconic giraffe is not the only one disappointed by an early retirement from Toys R Us, as thousands of (human) employees have also been laid off in the wake of the store's closing.

"I'm never going to have a job like Toys R Us", said long-time employee Patty Van Fossan, 54, from Boardroom, Ohio, who was among a group of workers at protests in NY, fighting for severance that they believe they are owed.

In a dire retail landscape, more than 8,000 U.S. shops closed in 2017, roughly double the average annual store closures in the previous decade, according to data from the International Council of Shopping Centres.

She shared photos of empty shelves, vacant shopping carts and a group of employees locking the doors of the soon-to-be shuttered store.

'My heart is breaking, ' Johnpiere wrote.

Toys R Us, which also owned Babies R Us, collapsed in February after they were unable to pay a £15million tax bill. Her photo of Geoffrey the Giraffe leaving got the most attention, receiving almost 300,000 shares on Facebook.

In March, Toys "R" Us announced its plans to start liquidation nationwide. The store has made many countless peoples' faces light up over the past 70 years.

Patty Van Fossan, a long-time employee from OH said of the closure: 'I'm never going to have a job like Toys R Us. I was surrounded by children'. "What we're asking is that the executives at Toys "R" Us would allow us to be the stewards of Geoffrey, their mascot, as a way for us to raise awareness for giraffe conservation".
