World Cup Group G match report Panama v Tunisia 28 June 2018

But it didn't take long for Tunisia to equalize on what was somewhat of a World Cup milestone, the 2,500th goal in the history of the tournament, which dates to 1930.

Tunisia bounced back in the second half, though, as goals from Fakhreddine Ben Youssef and Wahbi Khazri ensured Gomez's side will return home without a point.

Tunisia will conclude their Group G campaign against Panama on Thursday, in what is just a bid to salvage some World Cup pride. We wanted to snatch this victory, and I wanted to score, and I did.

Tunisia: Mathlouthi (6), Meriah (6), Haddadi (7), Bedoui (6), F Ben Youssef (7), Khazri (8), Sassi (7), Skhiri (6), Chaaleli (6), Naguez (6), Sliti (7).

Panama held a 1-0 lead at halftime because of an own-goal in which Jose Luis Rodriguez's hard shot deflected off of defender Yassine Meriah in the 33rd minute.

Coach Hernán Darío Gómez's men continued to push for more goals with less than 10 minutes to the end of the first half but they couldn't bury their final balls. Sunderland man Khazri worked a good crossing position before delivering a flawless ball into the stride of the onrushing Ben Yousef who had a simple task in powering the ball past the 'keeper.

Tunisia had 14 total shots against Panama, per WhoScored.com, but only five of those came about in the second half, when they had the opportunity to go for the killer blow and demonstrate some seniority in this, their fifth World Cup. Tunisia have won only one World Cup game in their history.

The result had no bearing on the final Group G standings as both teams were already eliminated from the competition. But the spirited duel and the fervour of the more than 37,000 fans in the Mordovia Arena belied the notion that this was a pointless match between two lowly nations.

"Perhaps in the second match, we should have been better. Our performance against England was very good.we should have been more defensive against Belgium", Tunisia coach Nabil Maaloul said.

Tunisia joined Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Egypt in failing to break out of the group stage while Panama fly home as one of only two nations to lose all three games and with the most goals conceded.
