Senegal crash out of World Cup on fair play to Japan

Colombia had to win to be sure of their progress, but with Poland beating Japan 1-0 in Volgograd, African representation at the World Cup was ended as Senegal failed to secure the point they needed.

In Group H, Colombia defeated Senegal, 1-0, and Japan lost to Poland by the same score.

After 48 games, 122 goals, 158 yellow cards, three cards and just one 0-0 draw (those pesky Danes and French have a lot to answer for), the group stage of the 2018 World Cup is over.

England hold no fear for World Cup last 16 opponents Colombia, said the South American side's coach Jose Pekerman, who is relishing the prospect of the "full on, to-the-death" knockout phase of the tournament. And I remember having a conversation with him a very long time ago and him telling me that they used to count corner kicks.

Japan are not the kind of team that rest players for the second round when they are not there yet, but Nishino took a gamble.

Despite being ranked lowest among their rivals at 61st, Japan drew against Senegal to set-up a very intriguing last group stage round among the four teams in the group.

Poland's star striker Robert Lewandowski missed a good chance to double the lead in the 74th minute, meaning he failed to score in all three matches he played at the World Cup in Russian Federation.

The changes made for a disjointed first half, with both teams struggling for cohesion and chances few and far between.

"Japan's style of play in the second half was a little disappointing", said 22-year-old student Takeaki Sudo, who watched the game at home with his family.

6 yellow cards to 4 yellow cards.

"Senegal's players were all highly committed".

It was a crushing blow to the Senegalese who had been the better side for most of the game and had a penalty award overturned in the first half after a VAR review.

Victor plays second of the earlier group so there could be mind games in this last meaningful match of the groups.

"I'm not too happy about this but I forced my players to do what I said".

Belgium will play Japan in the Round of 16 on Monday at 2 p.m. ET, while England will take on Colombia in the Round of 16 on Tuesday at 2 p.m. ET.

Jan Bednarek scored the only goal of the game as Poland signed off a disappointing campaign with a win.

Speaking as she arrived at the summit in the Belgian capital, May said Britain and the European Union are both keen to make "faster" progress on Brexit negotiations.
