Bali airport reopens as volcano rumbles

The shutdowns will lead to cancellation of 446 flights, including 207 global flights, affecting an estimated 74,928 passengers, he said.

The Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar will be shut on Friday until 7pm (local time), airport operator Angkasa Pura and the country's disaster agency said.

Air New Zealand has already cancelled flights, with flight NZ245 from Auckland to Bali and return flight NZ246 affected.

Garuda Indonesia's low-priced subsidiary, Citilink, resumed operations following the reopening of Ngurah Rai International Airport.

It's far from the first time Agung has interrupted travel plans for WA holiday-makers, with a November eruption previous year causing chaos to flight schedules.

In a statement, Qantas said it planned to resume operating flights between Australia and Denpasar this evening, subject to any change in conditions.

Airlines avoid flying through volcanic ash as it can damage aircraft engines, clog fuel and cooling systems and hamper visibility.

Two small airports, at Banyuwangi and Jember in eastern Java, also closed because of the ash threat.

Despite the eruption the volcano's status has not been raised by Indonesia's volcanology agency and remained at alert level, while the Volcano Observatory Notice For Aviation has issued an orange level warning.

Its last major eruption in 1963 killed more than 1,000 people and razed several villages.

It had a dramatic increase in activity last year, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands of people, but had quietened by early this year.

Local government seismologists monitor more than 120 active volcanoes.

Ash from a volcanic eruption on the Indonesian resort island of Bali has forced the closure of its worldwide airport and the cancellation of hundreds of flights on Friday, while villagers living beneath rumbling Mount Agung began fleeing their homes.

Ngurah Rai is a regional hub that serves more than 400 flights. The spokesman did not give a reason for the dramatic revision.

Clouds of ash from the Mount Agung volcano are lit with warm sunset light in Karangasem, Bali a year ago.

Denpasar Airport is closed as a result of the volcanic activity.
