South Koreans celebrate after historic World Cup victory

Holders Germany crashed out of the World Cup at the group stage on Wednesday in one of the biggest shocks in the tournament's history - failing to make it past the opening round for the first time since 1938.

After a disastrous start to their World Cup campaign, Germany looked to be virtually out of this World Cup when they were being held by Sweden in their second game of Group F, only for Toni Kroos to score a stunner right at the end.

Germany were caught out at the back as they threw men forward in search for a late victor, with Kim Young-Gwon flicking home inside the box two minutes into injury time.

The Koreans needed to record a victory over the Germans and see Mexico defeat Sweden to realise their slim hopes of advancing to the knockout phase. Shin, who had given South Korea a one per cent chance of victory before the game, said: "I feel great, but at the same time, I feel a little bit empty, so I feel a little ambivalent".

As both games entered stoppage time, it became clear that the outcome of Germany-South Korea would determine Mexico's fate. But the strategy did not bring much success in the first half.

Mexican fans in Russian Federation for the World Cup also expressed their gratitude to one South Korean they found outside the stadium in Ekaterinburg following the defeat to Sweden. Kim Seung-gyu had played at the 2014 World Cup and had 32 caps, followed by Kim Jin-hyeon, who starred in South Korea's run to the 2015 Asian Cup final, with 14.

In a Twitter video taken by VOA reporter Ramon Taylor, Mexican fans at an eating-place in New York City shouted in Spanish "CO-RE-A" after South Korea scored its first goal.

Fans went to the South Korean embassy in Mexico and forced the ambassador to come out and drink tequila with them. "I hope we can build on that, manage to improve and do better in the future".

Germany finished last in Group F, while Sweden and Mexico advanced to the round of 16 - despite Sweden beating Mexico 3-0.

"We are so proud of you", the newspaper said on its front page, adding the game "shook South Korea upside down". "For us, this is a huge disappointment".

In the 47th, Joshua Kimmich set up a wide-open Leon Goretzka for a header right at the goalmouth, but Jo jumped to his right and parried it away. South Korea have smaller players, very fast players. Time was running out when Matt Hummels headed over when free in the area and again and again Korea fund itself in good counter positions but just could not create that chance.
