Mom shoots man who lured daughter online, tried to break into home

This was not random, not spontaneous, this was something very planned.

"He proceeded to pound on their door and say he needed help and that he had just hitchhiked 30 miles to get there".

Skinner flew from New Zealand to Los Angeles, arriving June 20, before traveling to Goochland County, Virginia. When that didn't work he allegedly went upstairs and tried to break a glass door with a concrete landscape stone.

Authorities said Skinner attempted to break into the family's rear basement door with a brick.

"All I can say", Skinner said, "is the manner in which he attempted to enter that home in the face of a firearm pointed at him and the implements we recovered from him - the only inference is that he had very bad intent".

He said Skinner bought a knife and duct tape after arriving in the US.

"With federal charges involved he is also facing some serious penalties". He had been told in the past this daughter no longer wished to communicate with him.

"He is not the victim, that lady and her family members are the victims".

The mom who was at home with her two daughters at the time warned him several times that she had a gun.

Shamar Singh, a friend of Skinner's for eight years, told the New Zealand Herald he was shocked and initially thought the story circulating about Skinner was a prank.

Skinner was shot by the girl's mother after being repeatedly told that she had a gun and to leave the property.

His arrival here and his actions were totally unexpected by anyone, Mr Agnew said.

Two hours later, authorities received a phone call about a man wearing black trying to break into the family's home.

"He had his plane tickets from Auckland, New Zealand to Sydney, Australia, from Sydney, Australia to LA", Sheriff Agnew explained.

Skinner then reportedly attempted to flee and collapsed in the next door neighbour's yard where police ended up finding him and gave him medical attention.

"The younger daughter attempted to stop communications with him he was opening other accounts in an attempt to keep communications open and she did not cooperate with him", Agnew said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade on Tuesday confirmed it was in touch with the family of Skinner and had offered consular assistance.

The sheriff said Skinner first encountered the 14-year-old girl using the Discord chat service that allows video-gamers to communicate via their PC or smartphone.

Agnew declined to speculate at Monday's press conference about what he believed Skinner would have done had he succeeded in getting inside the girl's home, according to the Associated Press.

"When I sit back and think about it", Agnew concluded, "'You've got to be kidding me'".

Skinner then flew from New Zealand to Australia, Australia to Los Angeles, and Los Angeles to Washington D.C. From Washington, he took a Greyhound bus to Richmond.
