Japan slip through to last 16 despite Poland loss

Senegal's exit was compounded by the final ten minutes of the Japan Poland game which saw the Japanese players play the ball between their defence for the last ten minutes, showing no willingness to get forward.

That was the difference between the last 16 and a flight home for Senegal after they crashed out of the World Cup at the hands of Colombia.

Jan Bednarek got the solitary goal of the match in the 59th minute when he beat his marker at the far post to volley in a swirling free-kick from Rafal Kurzawa.

This means that Japan ended the tournament level with Senegal on four points.

England and Belgium will take on each other in a clash of the European heavyweights as they battle it out for top spot in their group on Thursday.

The centre-back, now at the World Cup with Senegal, believes the £88m (€100m) switch he is being linked with is mad.

They could not, and so bow out of the tournament, meaning there is no African nation in the knockouts of a World Cup for the first time in 36 years. The next tiebreaker would be points earned in matches between the teams that are tied, but Japan and Senegal played to a 2-2 draw when they met in the group stage, so that was a wash as well.

6 yellow cards to 4 yellow cards.

Senegal have four points heading into their final Group H game after beating Poland before drawing with Japan, who also have four points.

But more on that later, first up - Senegal vs. Colombia will be our focus with Japan and Poland on the second screen.

Colombia, now sitting in third in the group, needs a win to advance and will need another inspired performance from midfielder James Rodriguez.
