Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna suspended through August 4

Major League Baseball has suspended Toronto Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna through August 4 for violating the league's joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.

Osuna, 23, will be eligible to return to the roster on August 4. He'll miss out on roughly $2.7 million in salary - $35k per game.

Osuna was arrested by Toronto police and charged with assaulting a woman on May 8 and then placed on administrative leave.

"As this remains a legal matter, the club will have no further comment at this time", the Jays statement reads.

Osuna appeared this season in just 15 games prior to his arrest and posted nine saves and an ERA of 2.93. The league has been investigating the charges since.

Basile said the 23-year-old intends to plea not guilty and he plans to meet with the Crown to seek a resolution to the case ahead of a July 9 hearing, and some privately questioned why Major League Baseball jumped the gun.

Barring a change,"you take what Major League Baseball does, trust that and live with it", said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons.

Reliever Aroldis Chapman was the sport's first player who was disciplined under the domestic violence policy when he was suspended by the league for 30 games to start the 2016 regular season. You knew something was coming down.

Osuna is expected to participate in a confidential and comprehensive evaluation and treatment program supervised by the joint policy board of Major League Baseball and the players' association. "Hopefully, it all gets worked out on both sides and everyone gets the help they need and everything works out fine". Days later, shortstop Jose Reyes was suspended 51 games.
