76ers' Simmons wins Rookie of the Year

"We are fortunate to have a head coach in Brett Brown and dynamic young star in Ben Simmons who have rich histories and foundations in Australia", Sixers managing partner David Blitzer said.

Mitchell showed up to the event in Los Angeles in a big van with "Rookie?" emblazoned on the side.

"I'd like to thank my family to start out with. family, friends, you know I wouldn't be here without them", Simmons said in his acceptance speech.

Simmons and Mitchell engaged in a social media beef toward the end of the season with Mitchell arguing that Simmons wasn't really eligible for the award since he was drafted as a rookie in 2016.

Yes, the argument can be made that Simmons didn't deserve to be in the running since he joined the league the year before, but since he failed to play a single game that season due to a foot injury, it was fair to have him in consideration.

Simmons being considered a rookie this year had been a point of contention with Mitchell. Most notable of those was the sweatshirt Mitchell wore to a game with the definition of the word "rookie" on the front.

Simmons responded by dismissing Mitchell as a legitimate candidate for the award.

The award was decided by members of the USA and Canadian sports media and Simmons likely benefited from the date votes had to be cast.

An opening marquee clash between NBL champions Melbourne United and Ben Simmons' Philadelphia 76ers highlights seven games announced on Wednesday between NBL teams and National Basketball Association sides over a week starting September 28.

In the playoffs Simmons was exposed by the Celtics for his inability to make and take mid-range and three-point shots.

It was after the vote deadline when Mitchell was sensational in the Jazz's playoff run and Tatum went head-to-head with LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals.
