North Korea eschews anti-U.S. propaganda, mentions USA remains

Singapore said on Sunday it spent S$16.3 million (9.04 million pounds) on hosting the summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, less than earlier reports that had angered some locals.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told CNN he would not put a timeline on negotiations with North Korea, but said the Trump administration will regularly assess the regime's seriousness about abandoning its nuclear program as the USA moves toward normalizing relations with Pyongyang.

"There will be specific asks and there will be a specific timeline when we present the North Koreans with our concept of what implementation of the summit agreement looks like", the official reportedly said.

The United States, in the meantime, is preparing "specific asks" in a timeline that will be presented to North Korean officials as a result of the recent historic summit, Reuters reported.

The meeting concluded with the signing of a joint document between the two leaders, outlining their commitment to the complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

"If we can't do that, if it turns out that there is no capacity to deliver the outcome that both presidents said they wanted, yeah, we reassess", he said.

On Monday, Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White said defense officials would only speak to military-related aspects of negotiations on North Korea and that there was "no specific timeline" for the diplomatic process.

Japan has been eyeing prospects for a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, at which Prime Minister Shinzo Abe hopes to tackle the issue of Japanese citizens abducted decades ago by the North. "We'll see if the continuing negotiations keep them that way", Mattis said, adding that he was in frequent contact with Pompeo.

"The scope of the agreement and the event is very disappointing because there are at least 50,000 registered separate family members alive in South Korea alone", said Bong Young-shik, a political analyst with the Yonsei University's Institute for North Korean Studies in Seoul.

So far, it hasn't said much about what Washington is interested in the most - denuclearization. Last week, Tokyo said it would suspend the drills for the time being after the Singapore summit.
