US brings coffins to Korean border for remains of Korean War soldiers

A photo of President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is on display as a member of People's Democratic Party stands in opposition of military exercises between the United States and South Korea near the USA embassy in Seoul on Tuesday.

In a meeting in Tokyo involving high-ranking Japanese and US officials after that summit, Japan offered to participate in the denuclearization process and shoulder initial costs related to International Atomic Energy Agency inspections in North Korea, the sources said.

On Saturday, U.S. Forces Korea confirmed that one hundred temporary wooden caskets were sent to the inter-Korean border to hold their remains.as they're handed over in the next few days.

Meanwhile, the USA and South Korea have agreed to indefinitely suspend two exchange program training exercises, the Pentagon said on Friday, in the aftermath of the summit earlier this month.

Earlier, Yonhap cited an unnamed source as saying that about 30 U.S. military vehicles carrying 215 caskets were expected to cross into the North on Saturday afternoon.

The meetings came as the US and China appeared to be hurtling toward an all-out trade war - and a week after President Donald Trump's historic Singapore summit with Kim, which the North Korean leader already appears to be reaping the benefits of.

President Donald Trump declared Friday that North Korea still poses an "extraordinary threat" to the United States.

North Korea is estimated to have between 20 and 60 nuclear warheads, numerous ballistic missiles, including intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) that can potentially strike the US mainland, and 40 to 100 clandestine weapons labs and facilities, according a RAND Corporation report.

"This is a part of follow-up measures after the North Korea-U.S. summit and South Korea-North Korea summit". Last year's Freedom Guardian exercise involved about 50,000 South Korean and 17,500 USA troops.

Work continues to repatriate from North Korea. the remains of American soldiers killed in the Korean War.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo plans to meet with North Korean officials "at the earliest possible date "to implement the outcome of the recent leaders' summit", according to the State Department on Thursday".

He went on to say the pair had "great chemistry" and remains optimistic about a future relationship.

The U.S. had already been cutting back on the exercises in the months preceding the Singapore Summit as the opening to the North developed.

The United States was allowed to conduct 33 investigative and recovery operations in the country before former President George W. Bush's administration called off the search, claiming the safety of American participants was not guaranteed. China too has said they do not serve the cause of peace on the Korean Peninsula.
